Mother's Day
May 9, 2010

Neither my husband or I make a very big deal out of Mother's Day or Father's Day. As much as I like the idea of having another day in the year (other than my birthday of course) that is supposed to be all about me and how great I am... Mother's Day kind of falls into the same category as Valentine's Day for me. The "if you're only going to do something on one day, I'd rather you didn't" category. In other words, I think it's nice to set aside days that are meant to make us think about the people in our lives, but if you only pull out the stops and/or give your mom, dad, mother, father or lover appreciation on a day that is designated by the calendar... puh-lease...

That's not to say I don't like a nice gesture that says I love you in a special way, or a family get-together (because that's what families do on days like Mother's Day). What do you know... that's what my mother's day was like this year :-)

Worldless Wednesday - Layla's Party!

A mom for 3 years!

Dear Layla,

Today is your third birthday. It's so hard to imagine my life without you. Sometimes it is as if you've always been around - peppering my days with your smiles and your shananigans and sharing your sweet and funny way of seeing the world.

So many times in the last few months, you dad and I have wondered at the things that you say or do and exchanged a questioning smile "how old is she? is she really only 2?". But though you often seemed older than you were, I still can't believe you're now 3. And I can't believe I've been your mom... a mom... for 3 years!

Wordless Wednesday - Fun in a Box!

I love my girls. Like most kids, all it takes is something as simple as a cardboard box to make them smile....

As you can probably see... I'm playing around with lighting in these pics. Just for fun. I totally love the effect, especially on the last 2 shots!
So much for "wordless" :-)

Doing the dishes with my little helper

It's about 10 a.m.

The dog is walked. Supper is starting to simmer in the crock-pot. I would say that I'm having a pretty productive morning. Yes!

The little one is down for her first nap (which she desperately needs after her first few days of daycare and terrible napping). This is usually the time I devote to Layla... a craft, an activity, some quality one-on-one time with my "big" girl.

One look around the kitchen... do I clean up now? do I wait until lunch?

"Layla... do you want to help me do the dishes?"

It's really the perfect way to spend time with her and get something very practical done at the same time. She loves playing in the water, within 15-20 minutes all of my dishes are done and I have to convince her that it's time to do something else.

Isn't it true that sometimes it's just easier to include our little ones in the things that we need to do? Instead of sticking them in front of the t.v. one more time... or being irritated by the mess that is growing as we put it off to make sure that we get in enough of that essential one-on-one time?
I'm not saying there's never a time to ignore the house work. I do it all the time (!) I'm just saying that it's neat when we can "kill two birds with one stone".
What a productive morning!

There are sparkles outside!

Yesterday evening I dressed the girls up for our usual after-supper/pre-bedtime dog walk.
Brandon was coaching a basketball game so it was just the girls and me.

It was snowing ever so slightly and it was dark outside. The streetlights were reflecting off the dusting of snow on the street and sidewalk and making the snow shimmer.

Layla was walking ahead of me (Meaghan was tucked snuggly into my baby carrier) making "feet-men" (AKA foot prints) in the small amount of snow that was accumulating on the sidewalk. She was chatting about how there was just "a little" snow... "not a lot" when she stopped walking for a moment and looked around.
"oh mamma... the snow has sparkles on it"

I looked around to see that she was absolutely right. There were sparkles all over the ground!

It is really amazing to see the world through the eyes of a child. It sounds like a cliche but it's true and it's something that I am realizing more and more as Layla gets bigger and makes the oddest and most adorable connections about the world around her.

This is especially true right now - with Christmas coming and holiday preparations in the works.

Layla's was 8 months old for her first Christmas. She enjoyed playing with the wrapping paper and probably had her first taste of chocolate.

She was just over 1 1/2 last year... she recognized Santa (the red suit and beard) and "got" the whole present thing (and had more candy!).

This year she's a "big 2" and is really starting to get more of the magic of the holidays. To a certain extent anyways. She knows that Christmas is coming, she knows that "Santa" is bringing presents. She helped decorate the tree (not to mention her part in baking christmas treats!) and put Reuben's stocking on his actual foot...

While she may not understand the full depth of the true meaning of Christmas, she can sing parts of "Away in a manger" and knows that Jesus slept in a barn and that He loves her.
Watching her discover the world... and discover "Christmas" brings a whole new meaning to phrases like "the faith of a child" for me.

May we all have "child" moments this holiday season...
... and may we all see the "sparkles" when it snows...

P.S. Can't wait to see her reaction when tomorrow's "highly anticipated" snow storm hits!

A.O.K "trial" Gourmet (8) Angelettis

***For an introduction to A.O.K "trial" Gourmet - click here***

It's hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner. The 2009 holiday season is really creeping up on me and I blame the particularly beautiful month of November (mild, sunny... wonderful!) that we've been enjoying in Montreal. I'm used to seasonal grey and somber weather that tends to push me into thinking about the holidays early as a way to lift my spirits. Not so much this year. With just over 3 weeks to go, I've barely made a dent in my Christmas shopping and I have yet to send out invitations or make plans for holiday entertaining.

I'm not completely unprepared though. I did have the good sense to think ahead and invite a bunch of ladies over for an old fashioned cookie swap. If you've never heard of one of these, the idea is simple and brilliant. Instead of baking up a frenzy during the already busy month of December (trying to have as many yummy baked goods and tasty treats on hand for when family and friends are visiting during the holidays) I will bake a gi-normous batch of one or two types of cookies or bars, invite others to do the same - and then we will "swap". Voila! The results will be a scrumptious variety of home-made desserts to offer my guests. Not bad, huh?

Nothing is ever quite THAT simple or THAT easy. Not for me. If I'm hosting this swap then I want to be sure that my contribution is excellent. So with 2 weeks to go before the cookie party I have begun trying out new Christmas cookie recipes! Way to take the simple out of something that is meant to simplify my holiday preparations! Ah well. I enjoy baking... and it gives me a fun activity to do with Layla. AND maybe I'll find a new favorite recipe??? Maybe.

My search for new cookie recipes led me to marthastewart.com. She has a great article on hosting a cookie swap and a ton of recipes for tasty goodies for the holidays. I started looking at all the possibilities and was overwhelmed to say the least. Not only are there way too many choices and possibilities - I really cannot believe how much time and effort some people are willing to put into making cookies. I know I'm coming from the perspective of a mom of 2 little ones, but still - some of Martha's cookies are either pieces of art or incredibly labour intensive. With that said - I gravitated towards the recipes that looked simple (and that I already had the ingredients on hand for).

The "Angelettis" looked simple - something I could make WITH Layla. Something we could start and finish in one sitting. The recipe WAS simple. The cookies were easy to make with Layla and I had a couple dozen iced and ready to take with me for lunch with friends the same day. Perfect.

The Recipe...
(makes about 6 dozen)

Ingredients:
4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tablespoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup unsalted butter
1 cup granulated sugar
6 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla or anise extract
2 cups confectioners' sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice
coarse sanding sugar (AKA sprinkles) for decorating

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a medium bowl, sift together flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
  2. In the bowl of an electric mixer (with the paddle attachment) cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. On medium speed, add eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add vanilla; beat until incorporated. With mixer on, gradually add flour mixture. Beat until dough comes together.
  3. Scoop dough into tablespoon-size balls onto a baking sheet line with parchment paper. Bake until golden brown (about 15 minutes) Transfer to wire rack to cool.
  4. Meanwhile, stir together confectioners' sugar, lemon juice and 2 Tablespoons water. Place wire rack over a rimmed baking sheet. Once cookies have cooled, top with icing. Sprinkle with sugar and let stand until set.

The Result?
(1) A very enjoyable morning with Layla - even with the "don't touch that/no you can't eat that/wait/stop...er... let's try it this way...". Sigh... My little girl is truly her father's daughter. She has a deep love for cookie dough. Once we got the cookies mixed and baked, she absolutely loved putting the sprinkles on the cookies. I think the angelettis were a good choice for this as they're not a cookie that is supposed to look perfect. I can honestly say that our cookies turned out just as nice as Martha's!
(2) A pretty tasty cookie - especially when the amount of effort required is taken into consideration. Although the dough is very sticky, the cookie has a dry (but not too dry) texture. And I really like the lemony icing - it added just enough "zing" and sweetness.

So... Will the Angelettis be my swap contribution? They were good... but... I'd like to try a few more recipes first. Chocolate espresso snow caps, buttered rum melt-aways, cranberry noels and chocolate gingerbread. (What? Believe it or not, I've drastically narrowed it down - Once I started looking at the recipes, there were just too many that looked good...)

My goodness... I am going to have sooooo many cookies!

Dear Layla...

Dear Layla,
You turned 2 1/2 this weekend. For some reason your 1/2 birthday seems like it should be a milestone... something that I should mark in time.

Watching you grow "up" in front of me - I sometimes wish that I could freeze time and keep you just the way you are, right here, right now...

- You are such a happy little girl. Singing, smiling, joking and laughing all the time.
- You talk A LOT! On our way home from Ottawa last week, you talked for 3 hours straight (!)
- You talk in French too (thanks to the time you spend in daycare)... and are showing a clearer and clearer understanding of what words are "french" and "english".
- You make up songs by putting several different songs together... it's weird and funny... and very cute!
- You are so bossy! (Remember, Dad's the boss... you're just bossy!)
- You love people - especially the ones you know well. It's actually quite interesting how sure and how confident you are around the people you are comfortable with and how shy and uncertain you become when you're around strangers.

- You absolutely adore your little sister and as she comes up on her first 1/2 birthday (6 months... already... wow.) there is more and more interaction between the two of you. She watches your every move. You make her smile. You make her laugh. You climb into her bed and try to use her exersaucer. You even try to fit yourself into the jolly jumper. I keep telling you you're going to hurt yourself and that you're too big for Meaghan's toys, but I'm not sure you believe me just yet.
- You have a best friend. "N" is a sweet little girl, just a little older than you. You knew her before you were born and I wonder sometimes if that's part of why you have such a close bond for two such young girls (her mom and I were pregnant together and used to work out in the morning's before work... maybe the two of you will work out together one day too!).
-You're still "too little" when you want to be and "too big" when you want to be (!)
- You love sugar. When we bake together, you always want to eat handfuls of sugar - especially brown sugar!
- You like to WALK when we go out to walk Reuben (the dog) but we can usually convince you to get in the stroller if we want to go for a longer (& faster) walk. You're getting better and better at running too. And you love to play games and hide from your dad or from me... sometimes your hiding spots aren't so great though. I can still see you when you crouch down in the middle of the sidewalk to "hide" :-P
- You're discovering your body and you wonder if you'll have "boobies" like me one day... you know that Meaghan is just like you and you wonder why Dad is "different". I try to be very matter-of-fact about the whole anatomy issue... though it's still a little weird for me too.
- You tried to shave your legs with my razor in the bathtub today. I'll make sure I don't leave it in there again. I'm very lucky you didn't cut yourself.
- You are usually a good little eater - but you give me a hard time when it comes to vegetables. You ate Meaghan's pureed squash the other day though... I wonder if this will be the way you eat your vegetables?!?
- You still love your little "mousie" but have started taking other toys to bed with you. Tonight you went to sleep with mousie, your little baby doll, mo (teddy bear) and a little toy from the dollarstore (?)
- You like to "help" your Dad work out... whether you are mimicking his moves beside him or sitting on him while he tries to exercise!
- You like playing with your toy-kitchen... or "chicken" as you like to call it. For some reason you can only say "K-itchen" when you're whispering... otherwise when we try to correct you - you always say "K...K...K-CHICKEN".
- You like to help me cook for real too.

-You make me laugh every night when I wake you up to go pee (before I head to bed). You are half asleep on the little potty in your room and I'm sure you'd fall off if I wasn't holding you. I've got to get it on video!
- You are sooo cute when you say grace before we eat. Last week you started thanking God for people you love... on top of "for the food... and for ...riding for us" (providing for us).
- We aren't thrilled when we hear you little feet coming up the stairs to our room EARLY in the morning... but we can't help but think it's cute when you climb into bed tell us that you're "awake now". But seriously... what happened to your 7/7:30 wake up time?????
- You "go to work" in the front entrance of the house (between the two-doors). You take a bag and some books and when I ask you what you're going to do at work, you're response is "I'm going to play math... and play science too".
- You really like it when I trace pictures on your back when I sing "oh mr sun, sun, mr golden sun, please shine down on me..."
- You give us a run for our money at bedtime these days... "I have to pee", "I want milk", "I want a hug"... sigh...
- You love books and seem to always pick nighttime reading that is way out of your league. It's awfully weird to be reading about greenhouse gases to a toddler!!
- You also LOVE movies and along with your dad have discovered a new bedtime routine watching little clips on YouTube or "drawing" on the computer (Dad's laptop has a touchscreen).
-You're getting much better at sitting still while I do your hair. I was able to do 2 french braids in ONE try today!
- ...

...and I just know that there is so much I'm forgetting... so many special little habits or moments... I wish I could remember it all. I hope that writing some of this down will jog my memory in years to come... and be special for you to read when you're older.

Layla...Lay-li... Layla-Lou...Laylou... monkey...

You are my FIRST. My first pregnancy, my first baby, my first toddler, my first daughter... my first try at being a good mother (!) You will always be my first. In a way I will always be figuring things out with you. We will always be learning together. But as long as I'm living... my baby you'll be (just like I sing to you whenever I put you to bed!)

I love you sweetie. Happy 2 1/2. That means it's only 6 more months until your first bike!!!

Mamma (a.k.a Mom, Mommy, Mommio, .... or just A.)

Painting with Layla

With the new school year around the corner - and Brandon headed back to work full time next week - I am going to be on my own at home with the girls for the first time in a while. I know that this is what most moms are used to (and that I have been very very lucky)... but I have to admit that I am going to miss having him around - whether it's to grab Meaghan for a minute or entertain Layla while I do something else. All that said... I'm a little nervous and feel the need to be at least a little more prepared. I need a plan.

I know, I know... I'm nervous for nothing. For starters I'll only actually be "alone" with both girls a couple of days a week. Layla will be at daycare (for at least part of the day) 3 days a week. This keeps her spot for when I go back to work and will give me a chance to do all the laundry and housework without her "help" :-) AND on top of that - Meaghan is at an incredible age (4 months) where she is napping well and starting to entertain herself but not actually moving anywhere yet... therefore not requiring constant supervision (!) Nevertheless I want to be prepared for the days that I have Layla (my high energy, into everything, toddler) with me all day.

This need for a "plan" led me to my local craft store (with Layla) to purchase some much needed craft supplies. We left with paint, pompoms, feathers, children's scissors, glitter pens, construction paper, etc. I also bought an Usborne activity book for pre-school aged children - "Animal Fun".

Painting is supposed to be fun... and after purchasing all the stuff required to paint at home I was very excited to sit down with Layla and give it a try. Sigh. These are the times where I realize that I have very high expectations of my two-year-old.

"Layla. Watch. You wet the paint brush, you wet the paint, then you paint"

"Don't mix the colors sweetie"

"Layla, what did Mama say?"

"Layla! You have to wash the paint brush before you use a new color!"

"Layla!"

It's really very silly. What was supposed to be a fun activity for us to do together while her baby sister was napping turned into a frustrating half hour of me trying to control a toddler with a paint brush! I wanted her to use one paint color at a time, clean her paint brush in between BUT not use too much water... AND paint a picture with more than just one color. Too many rules Mama! I'm sure that's what she was thinking. In the end, I'm not sure I actually taught her anything about my "painting rules" but I still think she had fun. And THAT is what's important.
Next time I'll try and chill a little when she reaches her already blue covered paint brush for the white paint!
